top 10 trends for autumn
If you’re like me, your favorite season is autumn. If you’re also like me, anything to do with autumn makes you want to happily drown yourself in pumpkin scents, cozy sweaters, and a good horror (or romcom) flick. It only felt appropriate that I talk about my top ten fashion trends for autumn 2019! I’ve used Instagram posts from some of my favorite bloggers/influencers for examples of each, so give them a follow if you like what you see!
1. Cropped Cardigans
As seen on the beautiful Ally (@ally.winn), cropped cardigans are all the rave right now. While we have seen them a bit in summer, there are chunkier ones coming out more and more and when paired with a nice high waisted jean…they’re perfect for fall. I’ve seen them all over Instagram, and I am actually obsessed with them. I love that they add a layer of warmth while still being light enough to wear indoors when the heater is on. I know I live in California and we don’t exactly have cold autumns, so I am even more partial to them because of that.
2. Wide Brimmed Hats
We’ve seen these hats for years and years, but they’re definitely making a comeback this autumn and I love it. They are the perfect way to make a bad hair day work, or to add a little pizzaz to your everyday look. Kahlia (@kahliaanika) has been posting pictures with them lately and I love it. She makes them look so good, and will hopefully give you a little inspiration for your own outfits.
3. Plaid blazer
I am an absolute sucker for a blazer, and I’ve had my own plaid blazer for years now. They are so chic and don’t take much effort to make your look go from a simple t-shirt and jeans to fashion forward streetwear. The best thing about them is that you can find them for so cheap at your local thrift store. Bridgette (@bmariie) is my example of this look, and she absolutely kills it.
4. Jewel tones
While pastels were the color of 2019 summer, jewel tones are all the rave for autumn. Beige, brown, and orange have ruled autumn in the past (and are here to stay), a larger color palette is making big changes for autumn. Jewel tones are so deep and beautiful, and it is so exciting to see that fashion is brightening up the seasons. I loved the plum jacket that Sarah (@sarahgargano29) used in her photo above, and how easily you can incorporate these colors into your autumn wardrobe.
5. Leather on leather
Alright, so this isn’t a look that everybody can pull off, nor will everybody feel comfortable pulling it off. But when it is done well…man does it soar. It is a way to make the edginess of leather look classy and unique…leather on leather (faux more often than not). Leather pants with a leather top, leather dress with leather boots…you name it. It takes some getting used to, but like Emma (@emmaleger) shows in the above picture…it can really work and be a showstopper.
6. Animal print
Animal print is having a moment this year, and I am absolutely behind it. I am personally a cheetah/leopard print gal, but I love to see the different prints coming out and the outfit experimentations that go with it. I saw a zebra slip dress at Urban Outfitters that I loved, and I hope I can see more like it. Hope’s (@hopeannwilliams) snakeskin skirt is so unique, and I love that she found a way to take the skirt and turn it into an autumn outfit. People associate skirts often with summer, but they can really be worn year round!
7. Silk
We all know that silk was having its moment in spring and summer, specifically in pastel colors and slip dressed. However, it is definitely continuing into autumn and I am absolutely stoked at the outcome of that. It lets us bring dainty items into the harsher seasons and pair them with grungier looks. Adding a leather jacket or chunky boots, or even a blazer, allows for silk to make a statement in this season that is completely opposite from the one it’s made in the past. One of my favorite fashion ladies, Nits (@nitsanraiter), wears silk in a suit form and it is so gorgeous. Its just light enough to wear in autumn too, which is why I adore it.
8. puffer jackets
Puffer jackets have been around forever, but they’ve never necessarily been seen as “fashion forward.” They’ve often just been used for comfort and warmth. However, this past year they’ve made a comeback in a bigger way. Brands have started to crop them, or design them in ways that are flattering. They’ve added more colors to the mix and I’ve seen them more and more on Instagram used in fashionable ways. They are so comfortable and so cute, and an easy way to add a little flare to your simply outfit. You can see me style a burnt orange one for autumn in the picture above!
9. Pantsuits
Frankly, these have been back in fashion for years now but I’ve been seeing more and more created in vibrant colors and I am loving it. It was a bit hard to wear them in the sweltering heat this spring and summer, so autumn is the perfect time. I’ve seen them paired with crop tops or turtlenecks, or with nothing underneath, oversized, and buttoned up like Viviane (@vivianeaudi). I am adoring them, and I’ve recently found a pinstripe one from Savers that I cannot wait to wear this autumn.
10. Shoulder bags
I know everybody is in love with those miniature bags, but I’m an asthmatic and I desperately need to carry an inhaler and chamber with me everywhere…so they are extremely impractical for me. Which is why I’m very into the shoulder bags from the 90s and early 2000s. They don’t weigh you down, but fit the right amount of things for trip out of the house. I love that you can find them easily in thrift stores and they come in so many colors. I have a faux snakeskin, lime green one that I adore. Cere (@cereously) posted about her black one that I cannot stop thinking about it. Its so simple and chic, and it feels more of an accessory than a bulky bag.
